Just been looking at a few ears. At least one grain site affected per ear in resistant varieties and between 2 and 5 in susceptible ones. That's a big % loss. The surprise is the supposedly resistant ones, Skyfall and Elicit.

I don't spray summer insecticides either (with late drilling of wheat I shall probably give up autumn ones as well). But I didn't see a threshold at early ear emergence, yet I would consider the damage to be probably 3% which would be over an economic spraying threshold I would have thought. I need to look back at my BASIS project.
I hope there is some compensatory grain growth, but with the larvae sucking nutrients out of affected grain sites I don't see that.
