Used to muck about running veg oil in the old 110. I settled the oil, let the water sink to the bottom along with a lot of the fatty crud, then I would pour it through a tube rammed with sheep wool (though sometimes I would just pour the settled stuff straight in and stop when the crap appeared) and head off for a weekend binge session over west.
Was always interested in finding a way to clean old engine oil or transmission oil to reuse (my engines and transmissions were old and basic so I’m not too bothered about them really (and when you know of a FH130 360 that ran sweet as you like with 9000 hours without an oil change it makes you wonder...)
a while back I read about a guy who used to clean and put in additives to sort out ph level and maybe anti foam stuff of his used oil...
so as it’s a good time to find evening projects as the snowstorms rage outside I thought I would give it a go.
The donors of the wool...
A fox, just because.
I wanted to make a felt strip, washed it and got it clean, but was full of grit, but it’s just an experiment just now, so wasn’t too fussed, but my felt making skills aren’t great, and ended up rolling a rope and binding it with old mig wire. Unfortunately there’s a really narrow section right where the highest point is.
Made a light sheet metal spout to catch any drips and take them down to the bottom bucket.
Soaked the wick in clean oil and put it into the used oil (Out of Nissan navara 10 months old)
Then waited...
came out after tea and flow had slowed down, I think there was a lot of oil running back down into the dirty oil, so I put a bit of tig wire through the wall of the bucket and lifted the wick clear of the highest point of the spout.
getting a drip every 3 seconds!
I have too much time on my hands
