Old diesel

I have a 1000l of diesel that has been sitting unused in a tank for about 10 years. Its a cleanish tank and it’s full to the brim. Will it still be alright? I was going to pump it back into a tank with 10,000l in it.

I don't think I would risk contaminating the big tank? Can't you just top up with a proportion into a machine, particularly if you have some older engines?

I would keep it for the space heater and steam cleaner, price of fuel just now isn’t worth the risk of a damaged engine

I would be very concerned about additives. That fuel would have sulpher in it for lubrication of the pump and valve train.Not suire about over there, but here it has been removed for a number of years anfd would do internal damage as new engines are designed for it.

I must be tighter than others because I'd be using it but I'd draw it off from the top sacrificing a small portion at the bottom.

If I was feeling REALLY windy I'd put it through a filter before going in to vehicles.

I have a saw bench driven by a 60 year old petter ph1 diesel which runs a lot better when I put a small amount of universal 2 stroke oil in fuel tank

If it's pre bio-fuel without the ethanol in to attract water and grow bugs it will surely be just fine in a proper engine with mechanical injection. As above don't disturb it, carefully suck it out leaving a couple of inches at the bottom. I'll bet it's in better condition than modern biodiesel that's been sat 12 months, godawful stuff

9 times out of 10 folk would get away with it, but I guarantee if I put that old diesel in anything, knowing my luck it would have water in it and all sorts and be stopping tractors in their tracks for months after...

Then decide to use it when the oil price is on the floor.

As long as there isn't a load of moisture, rust and crud on the bottom of the tank and you manage to draw it off, it will be absolutely fine.

You may find stuff runs a bit smoother on it.

It’s not derv. It’s in an old broken irrigation pump that has sat at the back of a shed forever. The diesel looks fine. I like the hire firm suggestion ? but I get on well with them so I probably won’t try that one!

Advertise it on eBay - smallholders with a little old tractor will fight for that - tell them to turn up with an IBC
