Old Herts dealers - Braceys of Benington

A while ago I posted up a few old photos of former Herts Ford dealer Gates of Baldock. Here are a few from the late 1950s of Braceys of Benington, the old Herts International Harvester dealer. The branch was built to an old IH-specified design and still stands today - it was bought by Ernest Doe in 1987 and is now a New Holland outlet.

Braceys was a good old company, we used to go there for parts for anything IH and very often we used to go in the workshop and they would show us around and what they were repairing, bit different to today at Bennington!

At one time they made all sorts from cultivators to milk floats, it could well be one of theirs!

I've still got this braceys bag filler. Keep meaning to polish it up and use it to dispense my morning cereal, or similar!

A few more old Braceys of Benington photos I've found from a report on an open day in 1952, not long after this depot, built to an International Harvester design, was constructed. Anyone who used Braceys or who uses Ernest Doe's branch at Benington today will recognise the building.

The loader appears to be a long way forward making heavy steering

The building hasn’t changed much in all those years. I still pop in if I’m passing, or need anything, although the owners and prices have changed a fair bit.
It’s not so long ago that you could bang your shins on a piece of Braceys machinery in any nettle patch, on most farms round here, usually a gang of Cambridge rolls.
They employed a fair few from the local area, back in the day.

Used to work on a farm in Ware in Hertfordshire yrs ago . I remember the Braceys mobile van coming round every fortnight selling ag stuff .

Braceys used to build grain dryer set ups. When I was a lad we had them install an Alvan Blanch continuous flow drier, bins, conveyors and elevators with all the associated pipe work. I used to haunt them and one of the main welders they called Bogey used to make things for me in the lunch break. Spoons were a speciality. Happy days.
