I have an apple laptop which I use when I am training on my turbo to watch netflix
today the screen went crazy and the cursor refused to respond to my input on the touch pad
rebooted 3-4 times but no good film playing in back ground, on the screen a variety of frozen pictures.
the only difference is that I have installed a small gas stove in the Orangery where I train . This has a “wi fi” connection to the handset which acts as a thermostat controlling the stove.
can this connection screw up my laptop?

Turn the ""Wi-Fi"" on the stove off to test.
That is what I did and all seemed to work OK
so I assumed that was the issue.
however today all was not well again and the system was switched off.
after much playing about it seems a programme was running in the back ground, which appeared to be connected to chrome. Have now removed chrome and all seems OK
see what tomorrow throws up;)

There must be an apple equivalent of Task Manager? Get in there and see if there's anything consuming a vast amount of resources.

Another thing to look out for is that some home devices with Wi-Fi control (Internet of Things or IoT) don't have the capacity to run proper security features. They can become a backdoor for a nasty virus to get into your network and infect your computer.

how big a gas stove and what type, gas can be a damp heat and I'm wondering if some moisture has got into the laptop

I've come across a little program called "Little Snitch". It is easy to use (even I can use it) and you can block certain sites from accessing your computer from the internet. I wonder if that would help? It's not free but costs around £40. If I told you what I use it for, I'd have to kill you, and I don't suppose you'd like that.

Im actually impressed, Yes this is a software based firewall and is well known. You cant go wrong with a good old fashion anti virus as well, There is a big misconception that apple products dont need these these which is falsely represented. Apple products are actually more likely to fall foul of someone taking over your camera etc.
