Opinions on potential rotation

Just trying to re-jig my rotation for a number of objectives,

upload_2019-7-13_14-39-43.png

  • To make area parcels similar size
  • Maximise 1st wheats
  • Spring break crops to help with grass weeds
  • Make best use of manures and sustainable fertilisers to reduce bought in P & K
Notes:
  • Spring oats and maize to use as foage for dairy herd
  • Struggle to get good establishment on cover crops, so not really an option
  • Tiger K is potash fertiliser
  • SS is sewage sludge
  • Drilling is done with strip til drill, apat from maize which will be ploughed and subsoiled
  • Plan to apply 20t/ha of SS/FYM but will use Soyl recommendions
My concern is that there my be too much P and not enough K applied over the duration of the rotation, although extra MOP can be applied.

Constructive thoughts please

As said before if those breaks are profitable then sounds good. Have you considered second cereals or are they not successful for you? My only other thought would be that are you undoing a lot of the good done by strip tillage when you plough for your maize?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
