There was a referendum because of internal Tory elite, politics. To say that Citizen Joe, was exercised by the need for such a referendum, is nonsense. It was just the elite, being elite….
On the other hand you could argue that really the only reason Cameron got elected in the first place was because he promised to hold a referendum, once elected he had no choice but to fulfil that promise!

Look, no one is disputing here that Paterson is a slimy crook, but some of this is blatantly untrue, Randox tests have never been mandatory for travel. If you wish to travel from the UK there are lots of available providors besides Randox When I travelled abroad BA gave me a list of around 20 companies
The only thing 17 million remember is the endless anti EU bullsh!t from Nigel Farage and the tabloid media.
That maybe the case but the remain camp didn’t argue anywhere near enough to strengthen their argument so “it takes two” so to speak

A bold statement based on no facts. I was one of 17 million and I decided on that position well before I heard of Nigel Farage. I will concede that he became highly influential and forced Cameron into holding a referendum, thereafter there were many and diverse reasons for the way that people voted.

Being in or out of Europe wasn't even in the top 10 of things that concerned the British public prior to the referendum. The vast majority were even interested in anything the EU was doing other than being fed the stupid tabloid rubbish about strait cucumbers, 75% of jobs go to immigrants, EU migrants commit 700 crimes a week etc.
However, one thing the EU can thank the UK for, is that the Brexit shambles has made even then most hard right European politicians revue any though of leaving.
Funny how it was those in the centre left working class areas that swing it not the hard right. Anyone who thinks Boris is hard right has left their marbles in the rain too long, as for others having second thoughts, plenty are questioning the supremacy of eu courts even MB, personally I dont care if any others leave, good luck to the EU we are free of it, just need to sort out westminster now

That's why ukip consistently won huge numbers of votes, both tories and labour have pro and anti eu supporters, all EU countries have those that like or dislike it, however if it was just a trading block and not a political idea it would gain far more supporters

I feel indebted to Nigel Farage for forcing a referendum on the EU and, having done so, for his campaigning that followed. I would never vote for him as a front line politician and I am sure many others feel the same.

Is he any worse than the clowns in Westminster we have now ? Boris, Gove or captain hindsight or rayner, I'm sure there is a liberal to add to that list but dont know any of them. What a shambles they are.

I fear Farage in a way because he is immensely clever. manipulative and influential. I would hate to be on the wrong side of him in a debate and I don`t believe he is suited to anything remotely like consensus politics.

Considering the influence & dedicated work Farage put in to make sure we at least had an opportunity to have a say on our future, it's almost a national disgrace that he hasn't received an award of some sort, whether you agreed with him or not there is no denying the long hard work he put in.
When you look at some of the pathetic toady ineffective prats of politicians that end up with peerages he should be at the front of the queue, says everything you need to know about the Tories that he is not!!

I guess you missed the fact that one trick pony, one political strategy, Nigel Farage stood for election to Westminster seven times, and was rejected seven times by the electorate. Does that not tell you, that his political philosophy was of no interest to the people? They really weren’t in the least bit interested in his waffle.

The guy said nothing that very very many in both Labour & the Tories said & believed in the past, they just weren't brave enough to keep raising their heads above the parapet as it ruined any chance of promotion!
