Hi .need some help just purchased an old oxford allen scythe ..would not start...have cleaned carb..,tank,changed fuel pipe ,striped and cleaned flywheel with magnets replaced coil to points lead ,tested coil and get good reading cleaned contacts on point's, adjusted tdc timing .new spark plug ..but still no spark ... ..could the coil be at eathing even though it tested ok .....help I will try anything

Did you check the condenser which is under the points and how did you clean the points do not use iron oxide emery cloth use sandpaper, emery will short out points, have you also set gap correctly, disconnect condenser from points and re-check for spark, if ok replace condenser, it's not needed for a spark but must be connected before running engine, stops excessive sparking and burning of points....

You should get equalish resistance readings on both the primary and secondary sides of the coil, have you got a good connection onto the brass tab at the back and is the plug lead all good.
As forblue mentioned you should try disconnecting the condenser.
If all that looks good you could try taking the whole plate off and putting it in the airing cupboard for a couple of days, in case there is moisture inside the coil.
I have heard that the flywheel magnets can lose their magnetism/strength if left off for a long time.

Many ,many thanks for the analysis and no I haven't tried disconnecting condenser..I will try that and the magnets are very strong... I think that the answer is in the condenser...will let you know
