PA8

I've just been made aware of PA8. Has anyone else heard that anyone operating a mixer bowser that transports mixed chemical needs this qualification ( unless grandfather rights apply ). We operate a system where we run 1 large self propelled sprayer and a mixer bowser for most of the time we are spraying. The 2 people who operate this both drive the sprayer and both operate the bowser. Why the hell do they need a different qualification for doing the same job? Is there anyone at the NFUse countering this bulls%%t. I seriously question if anyone stands up to proposed regulation in agriculture!

I think your fine if you did PA1 & PA2 before 2012. Something to do with PA3 as well but can’t remember. If your just carrying water in the bowser and chemicals are in a locker than I don’t think you need any qualifications. PA8 only refers to carrying a mixed bowser of chemical solution... I think

Or put a small boom on the back? This whole PA thing is rapidly becoming a money making scam mind. I fully accept the need for training and refresher courses but 8 modules? It's s bit like the plant sector. All gone mad all unsurprisingly run by CITB.

I might have got the wrong end of the stick but I think you only need the pa8 if you don’t have pa1&2, so if your guys are both doing the spraying I’m guessing they both have pa1&2 so they are fine, as someone has said, it only applies if it’s a mixed bowser, if just water and chemical in locker you don’t need anything.

City and Guilds seem a bit confused about this one. They say it is legally required if you are applying pesticides, but if you’re only filling the bowser then you aren’t applying pesticides so surely it doesn’t legally apply?
From their website;

Type of Learner: If your job involves applying pesticides in a commercial role then you are legally required by the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations (2012) to take this qualification.

Qualification Overview: This qualification is designed specifically for those who mix and transfer pesticides as part of their daily role. The award will supersede the old 0216 (pa8) unit.

More red tape. PA1 & PA2 should be adequate. I bet the reason is because of transferring chemical solutions through a removable hose.

Sorry but I know this is slightly side tracking but I have the idea of using a safe and serviceable converted sprayer to do this one load at a time from the yard or bowser. Clean water from the wash tank will be added at the end of each transfer to flush the hose out, making sure the final solution supplied to the sprayer is of the right concentration. Has anyone got any further advice in doing this? Thank you.

surely pa1 covers use of a mixer ? it’s safe use and handling of pesticides which is all you are doing with a mixer bowser

if not what is the point in pa1 ?

pa 1 covers you to calculate rates open cans, measure and fill a sprayer but not actually apply - why is that different to filling a mixer or bowser ?

No but thinking of doing something similar, particularly if it's going to be a wet and clarty spring.

Pa1 now only covers the legislation of handling pesticides these days, all aspects of measuring chemicals and filling applicators has been moved to the relevant application based module.

Anyone who passed Pa2 or Pa3 prior to mid 2012 is covered for Pa8, if you passed either since then you will need to take another assessment I’m afraid

Remember it’s not us guys who train in these qualifications who set them, we may not even agree with things trotted out by City & Guilds in these areas at times ourselves.
It’s amazing how some people’s attitudes changed to me between being a farm worker to when I went into training because of health reasons....we’re not the enemy, the people who are however are the ones who keep flouting rules meaning they get tightened up for everyone else.

i think it's more to do with traveling on road with a tanker full of chemical, even tho most sprayers will travel from yard to field with a tank full of mixed chemical
