Will anyone retire for sat a 50k lump sum though? By the time it’s taxed there wouldn’t be a lot left
Back when I was in school you got marks for showing how your working out.ooh I know that one. It's 10 pence on the farmgate price of a chicken, we worked it out in double maths.
Think you can just rent the land out, no need to sell, and whats stopping Landlords just taking land back and farming it themselves200 acre farm @£8000/ac
House @£350,000
£2,000,000 in asset value but will sell it up for £50k lump sum?
Or is it just to stop farming the land themselves?
Why not simply say no farming business can receive more than say £50K, the vast majority of subsidy goes to the British Sugar, grand estates & Dysons of this world, wonder why the NFU aren't proposing limits on any subsidy payments, pretty easy to guess why!The very notion boils my pee frankley, bps claimants have claimed many tens of thousands of pounds every year for the last 20 years adding up to quite a lot even on a small farm, the next bloke is then expected to do it for feck all. It's a damning indictment of where they think the industry is heading. Also most of the young farmers I know have decent jobs to keep their farming habit, so it'll want to be pretty lucrative to encourage them and others to pop down the local branch of barcleys and borrow a few million quid to bankroll defras enviro. schemes, which, on the rpa's track record, no bank would bother, and anyway what sort of encouragement to pack up is 20 grand, not gonna buy many chalais on the welsh riviera is it?
That's what's happening now, it's doesn't encourage young farmersThink you can just rent the land out, no need to sell, and whats stopping Landlords just taking land back and farming it themselves
Most of the farmers I know would take the money and buy more cows, it's only a hobby afterall.Multiple threads running this story, i cant see farmers retiring after a year of good prices and feeling wanted for once. Retire and sit and wait to die, the stubborn old boys they want gone dont play golf etc so they arent going anywhere for 50-100k
Or a shiny new tractor! That's where owner occupier subs go why break traditionMost of the farmers I know would take the money and buy more cows, it's only a hobby afterall.
UK government to pay older farmers to retire
Older farmers in England will be paid to retire under a government scheme.www.bbc.co.uk
Average farmer could get 50k with the largest landowners getting 100k
Average farmer gets 21k per year
Wish I could persuade my old man to buy a new tractor! He's the only bloke I know thats got odd welliesOr a shiny new tractor! That's where owner occupier subs go why break tradition
You are nearly right,Yep
I would think the same, farms farmed by older farmers are more environmentally friendly places.
Seems like they want yonger people to keep producing food but subsidise it themselves through diversification so the gov don't have to subsidise it
I was speaking to my NFUS agent yesterday, and we got on talking about this subject. Then nfu has had to accept that food production is now at best 3rd on the list of priorities , for land use. The decisions Have been made in government, that climate and biodiversity are much more critical than food production. We are going to have to accept that farming for food is clearly a thing of the past, and I agree that we will definitely be signing up to the free trade deal with Aus and NZ.Just another sign of how much they really don’t want us to be producing food in the UK at all.
Govt policy is all about rewilding and that’s been the message for years now but we just don’t get that and carry on producing no matter how much we are up against it or how many obstacles they put in place to make it unattractive.
Must be pulling their hair out that their dreams of a national forest etc. may be in doubt so decided throwing some money at us to give up will do it.
Anyone that thinks we won’t be signing up to a trade deal with Aus & NZ is deluded. Just yet another nail in Defra’s armoury.
HGV driversCan you name any other industry that its people are told, give up you old fool you are past it
