Performance recorded sheep.

Was having a discussion about the above. Would be curious to know what the largest flock / flocks of SIG / SIL recorded sheep in the UK are? In the sense of who, how many and what breed?

Biggest isn’t always better but when it comes to recording sheep, the more you record, I think the more meaningful the data ?

And really talking about sheep managed in same way by same folk in same place, rather than multiplier flocks. But would also be curious to know what size recorded flock some of those operations have.

Partly curious as am wondering if we may be being over ambitious 😂

The data isn't necessarily more meaningful, there is just more of it, and the system likes more data, that doesn't mean that this is representative of the sheep.

It also depends on how diverse you wish the sheep to be, vast numbers of sheep that are all from one farm in North West Scotland may not be the best performers in South East England, but if they are from 100 smaller flocks dotted all over they country they'll indicate adaptability to be suited to different regions, assuming there are enough cross references within the population.

Recording sheep that lamb outside is time consuming, as I'm sure you know @CopperBeech. That's probably you're limiting step. Otherwise, running them through a weigh crate isn't too onerous, then backscan a representative sample. You could probably record bigger numbers lambing inside but that's not really the point, is it?
DNA recording and foetal aging at scanning will over come most issues. But are expensive.

I’ve no interest in recording until dna parentage testing becaomes affordable, but if it was it would be a great tool!
We're a bit off DNA being a reliable tool to pick out a lamb's parentage from a large number of possibilities, never mind becoming affordable.

Surely recording Easycares is completely at odds with the ‘Easycare ethos’ of a hands off lambing?
I can’t remember where I read that.🤔

It used to be on the society website. However, they’ve recently changed their stance. They now encourage recording, but it isn’t compulsory.
