I have a perkins 4.236T which was rebuilt by a reputable firm 500hrs ago and its burning some oil.

Approx 1L in 100hrs

It had the full works for an engine rebuild, and turbo and injectors were sent off and sent for checking out and reconditioning

Any ideas ?

bit pee'd off TBH.

Not being funny but some peoples idea of a full rebuild is a set of piston rings and big end shells and on you go!

Was the valve guides changed?
rings and pistons?
Linners (actually not sure 4236 engine has liners or not??? i know the later 1000 series does)

Was the cylinders honed correctly?
and was a running in oil used?
has it been on light loads since the overhaul? (light loads after a overhaul wouldn't be good for it)

What oil you been using in it since?

Quite a few variables here so above is just some ideas.

Not entirely sure of all the details, however it cost 4k euro for the whole rebuild, the original block had a crack in it and was putting the oil in the water so its a new block or different one at any rate.

Not sure on everthing you asked above however, would have to find out.

15w 40 engine oil going into it.

A professional firm who does it for a living did the work, rebuilding several engines a week did the work.

Its not on light work, its in a Volvo loader so gets puts under full load a few times day dragging the machine up a hill as it has been since it was replaced.

A litre in 100hrs is far from excessive. Some engines don’t like to be on full mark on dipstick either. Does she actually burn it down to the min mark? Not being funny but as it’s in a loader is the correct dipstick for the sump fitted as you mention another block etc

The 4236 does have dry sleeve liners.
At €4k for the work done, I'd like to think it had at least received a new or remanufactured short motor, but it really isn't a lot of oil usage in 100hrs, especially for an old school 100 series Perkins.
