Perkins 4.248 leaking water into oil

Hi all...

Ive just ‘acquired’ a mf300 crawler loader which has been sat outside for a long period. The engine is a Perkins 4.248.

When I pour water into the radiator, I can hear it running at quite a rate into the engine sump! Not ideal !

We have managed to get the engine running enough to extract the machine from its resting place, but i am at a bit of a loss as to how the water is getting so rapidly into the sump..

I have removed the rocker cover, and I can hear the water running via the push rod ducts, but can’t see any signs of where it is getting in ..

I have been draining the sump each time so it is not building up !

Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated ..

I wonder whether there are any corroded pennies in the cylinder head? Maybe a blown head gasket? Frozen and internally cracked water jacket [external pennies should be forced out first though].

All questions not answers. Sorry.

No oil cooler.
My latest thoughts are a core plug inside the timing cover...?

anyone know if that’s likely on a 248 ?
I haven't got first hand knowledge of this but see to remember that being an issue that was discussed at some time. Can't remember if it was here or at a dealership workshop. Not much help but it is certainly a possibility. At the rate it seems to leak, my first thought was a 'penny' core plug internally.

Better asking in the classics section
FWIW the phaser engines are really bad for wearing away the timing case cover which let's the water into the engine. Not sure if the A4s are the same or not.

The only engine I have ever had problems with the core plug pennies with, was a Perkins 4.248 in a MF 690.
When I drained the rad and block to change a penny, I’d never seen so much rusty water in any cooling system before or ever since!

Just a suggestion. Can you drop the sump, if you can it will give you a much better idea where the coolant is entering the engine.

Sadly, not without removing the engine from the chassis.. 🥴

Its being transported to the home farm tomorrow, then I can get stuck into it..
