We are staying on the southern side of the Loire valley at Clere du Bois. Travelling around the area over the last few days, there are some superb looking crops of OSR and wheat, but also plenty of patchy and apparently re-sown areas as well. The maize drilling is going on fast, but there still seems to be large areas which look as if they have not been cropped last year or this, is fallow a feature of arable farming in this region or is there another explanation? I would be interested to know?

You guys certainly have some superb livestock, lovely pics and very interesting.

looking crops
there will be alot of game cover around there, brenne parc big chasse country
paid by the federation de chasse
sown on dodgy patches and left overwinter
not allowed to harvest it
may explain it

Thanks for that, I have seen quite a bit of game cover about, but the stuff I had in mind looks just like a stubble only another year on, tufty grass, weedy etc, doesn't seem to make any sense to me, quite big areas in some places

We arr further south than the others on the forum. But we get about 700mm of which most falls between october and may. Approx 500mm this year . Summer rain is a very erractic and localised it might rain on one part of a feild and not the other

It was an exceptional year for maize in 2011. Humidity of around 17-20 and a yeild of around 15t/ha under the pivot.

Usually can swim up to end of september. Being from ireland we are used to cold water, locals think we are bit mad as we are the first into thepool and last out.

We drill with 6 rows and contractor harvests with 8 . Not ideal esp if drill man has a wobble.
