The field had been performing badly so we sorted out the compaction by deep sub-soiling. Then used an Aitchison to put in 55% Likoloss WW and Contea Crimson clover at 45% at 32K per Hc. drilled on 04-10-12. I wont be ploughing down for grass again.

Yes I will bale and wrap on Tuesday, it's wet and heavy and I want it as near haylage as I can get.

I suspect your a happy man with that. (y) How long would this mixture stay down for?
Meant to say off 4 Hc.
I am happy, finally 'sorted' that field. I am going to throw some aftercut on and hope we get some rain, after 2nd cut I will see if it will do a 3rd. If doubtful I will put some 'Interculture 8 week Oats and Vesce into it. Glyphosate. Then I will re-seed again. Will see how it performs as this is the 1st time I have used this mix, will see how hot it gets as it won't like 40+ in the shade. I will also look at the costings as I have a piece of Elunaria WW which is an 18 month ley and has done really well, 2nd year now. Both German bred and seem to perform well in our conditions.

do you put 18/46 fert on with drill do you find it makes a difference, do you use sabot/coulter or disc?
sorry if this is a bit off thread.

We just use an old Monosem four row which works fine. But we only plant 4 to 6 ha of maize a year. The photo is a couple of years ago, still to wet to plant at the moment.

We currently use one of these, which is good. Do not both localising fert, too expensive and complicated for a simple man like me.

but would rather one of these in 6 rows as they are bomb proof

hope you lot are getting better weather than us, we have had to start the heating in the house again, cannot get on to the land to treat the maize but thanks god we have finish sowing as there is still plenty of maize still to be planted here esp around the pyrennes.

how do you find depth control with the maxima as that was the model I was thinking about, bit older than that one maybe, are there any other problems with it, and no cruiser next year, I need to do better getting it out of the ground quickly and evenly.
Good luck didn't realise the sh!t weather was all the way down to you, we also lit the fire last week.
Hay making weather next week so they tell me!
all I need now is some grass!

Depth control is ok, how much are you going to be sowing. We bought ours new as most good second hand ones still 5 year old were only 4-5K cheaper than a new one. If you can get a second hand john deere one it would be better, do not worry about the age as they are very stong and with john deere you can get what ever add ons you need directly from the USA (ie opening discs, row cleaners, fert localisers etc)

No cruiser next year is going to be a problem, lets hope one of the new generation insectcides gets approved.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
