poor solenoid or poor switch ?

our volvo L30 is developing a small problem

sometimes when you change gear from 2 down to 1 it fails to engage and stays in 2. As per the manual when you downshift from 2 to 1 a solenoid needs to engage.

Sometimes it changes instantaneously, more times within 5 sec and sometimes it can take a few mins. The oil would be well warm at all times

How do I figure out whether I have a poor switch or solenoid. ?

I guess I swap around the solenoids for starters

Same brand of lever used on lots jcb. They get full of dirt in the twist grip. Its possble to clean them but not easy to pull apart and put back together with out breaking it.

electrical contact cleaner not WD40 but it would still need the twist grip stripping to do the job.

On a JCB its not worth the agro as the levers arnt that expensive but I bet a Volvo one is a fair few £££s

Is a JCB lever a 12V lever ?, our volvo is 24V and that is why I think, there is a crossover cable look alike thing attached to the initial lever in the photo.

How much is the JCB one, the volvo one is ~200

Jcb wont cross over just they are same make. At 200 for new one i think thats actually quite good would have expected more beening volvo?

Genuine jcb ones are more than that!

Its not worth messing with.
