Hi, has anyone got one or used one?

Interested in people's views who have one.Thinking of getting one for my dad to save him so much splitting as his body is not what it once was (neither is mine) .

Kinetic splitters might be ok for straight grain and not large diameter but a hydraulic ram with a good shape wedge will go through anything ,twisted ,knotty and big ,,the Browns my land lord has will crack anything, any size ,,yes they are slower but watching it go through something ugly is very satisfying

Whichever splitter you get, pay some attention to the wood handling - you need a good table around the splitter beam so split timber doesn't go to ground. Arrange the splitter/table height to be the same as the trailer the timber comes on, so minimise lifting. Use a pickaroon and/or hand log tongs (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Husqvarna-574387501-Lifting-Tongs-20cm/dp/B003B3MH2M). Try to lift NOTHING off the floor by hand etc etc

Ive always found hydraulic ones frustratingly slow and this one looks much quicker.

It could be plugged in outside his back door or run off a generator in the woods if needed I expect.

I was hoping someone might have had actual experience with one and could say how it performs in the real world.

Have a search on Arbtalk, that's where you will find a users experience.
By all accounts they are great in straight grained wood, not so great in knotty stuff and not particularly robust long term. They work on a rack and pinion and they wear/break.

As already said above, the handling of the wood just before and after splitting is at least as bigger consideration as the action of the splitter.

The first video I saw of a Portek charger looked back breaking with the operators poor manual handling.

i used to sell them - avoid they are rubbish and portek did not support customers with issues at all

I just bought a Jansen FS-35 kinetic splitter, it splits about 3 times faster than a hydraulic splitter, absolutely love it. They have some mixed reviews online but there’s a dealer in Galway who offers good backup so I’m hoping if I do encounter any problems he will be able to get me out of them

Keep me posted once you've spent some time really working it?

Was considering spending about a grand on a Venom one from Rock machinery. Most were out of stock and they never bothered answering any emails, and this was before covid arrived. What I do not like about the Portek and similar oes is they are ground mounted I would get a bad back in no time.
