Possible fatal reaction to Buscopan

Had a case of bloat late last week, kept her back for the vet to check her out. Ate hay and nuts, while waiting for visit, walked into the crush, vet let some gas out.

He went to inject buscopan into the vein, and the cow went into a seizure and never recovered.

Not seen bloat in dairy cows before, but in calves and had success in treating them. But can never recall them being administered buscopan.

If the vet is concerned it was a reaction to the buscopan then he/she should inform veterinary medicines directorate. But I don't think it is licensed for cows in milk or pregnant cows. Might just have been 'one of those things' though from the stress of her situation.

Bloat puts pressure onto the cows heart

Was it frothy bloat or gaseous bloat? would be my first question.

Both can be eased in an emergency with a carving knife in the right place. Further treatment depends on type of bloat

Did the vet clear the vein of any air bubbles. Could have been an embolism from incorrectly administered IV drug, rather than the drug itself. Why not a 'red devil' to release air?
Buscopan as an anti spasmodic drug, should be given very slowly IV, or it can lower blood pressure, and cause heart problems or death.

A vet told me many years ago that a colleague of his tried to euthanize a bull by injecting it with syringe after syringe of air and it never worked.

Administrating knock-out drugs is said to be far more dodgy because their weight and how it affects them can be difficult to judge.

It used to be licensed with a milk WD. You can still use it on the cascade with a 28 day milk WD.

It’s theoretical to kill a beast with an embolism but never happens. Buscopan is a safe drug. My guess is either the stress of being messed about with or possibility of injecting into the carotid artery which runs deep to the vein. With bloat they can’t blow of enough CO2 so end up with acidotic blood which is not good for life.

It doesn't say its not allowed to be used in cattle. it says its NOT PERMITTED in cows producing milk for human consumption. Does that then mean you can if you keep the milk out for a little bit?
Yep 7 days would be the minimum (I said 28 above but thats meat). It has a MRL so it can be used. It’s a licensing thing where the manufacture hasn’t bothered doing all the trial work to get it re-submitted for a milk WD. Cascade get used a lot, technically most antibiotics and anti linflammatories together are under cascade as most aren’t licences together.
