Post hole auger?

I've got about 6 gate posts posts to sink in and don't own a post knocker. (I know I can hire one off @Thick Farmer)

Would something like this do a good job or not worth the bother?

Hire a knocker. Hire a pair of knockers. Hire a lovely pair of knockers but unless your land is soft and stone free I wouldn't try the auger idea.
Tried a motorised one once when a tool hire man called and saw me 4 foot down digging in a gate post, he swore blind it would do the job for me no problem - it didn't. It got maybe 6 " in, lodged in some shale or stone or something and 10st of MRT went that way >>>>>>>>. It kept turning at a million miles an hour bolt upright and took some stopping.

I've a Fleming auger on the back of an MF390 and it will make a hole for a strainer or gate post in minutes, deeper than I need, but I am on sand so it is easy work. The trouble here is a high water table and it is difficult to dig a hole deep enough by hand before the sides start falling in. I was dubious about the auger but it will make a hole very quickly and I can get the post in before it starts to collapse. Judging by the s/h prices, I should get my money back (almost!) when I want to sell it which will be after I have put up a couple of sheds.

Can't see how you ever keep strainers tight when you dig a hole and back fill it,surely knocker is only way to go, you can't beat a tight fit in a tight hole.
ummmmm they dug holes for years before post knockers and even with post knockers un less stayed and tie downs on them some will pull wet post in to wet clay both will shrink and posts can pop

Got an auger on a mini digger here but also a post bumping foot for the pecker. Didn't want to use the post foot for compacting so had a whacker foot made for the pecker. It's unbelievable how tight it puts the soil and stone around a post in a bigger hole. Most of the time it's used when a smaller post replaces the original.
