We‘re shifting spuds out here £40pt less than they cost to grow, and people are telling us we’re lucky selling them!

Edit: the merchant is making more on them for a phone call than us for a years work.

People keep telling us that too. We on markies and shifting all we want. Price is very disheartening though. I heard one big grower around here say he’s loosing £1/bag.

No. Everyone will think everyone else will cut back because of the poor price, then in typical farmer mentality will keep their area up to cash in.

So expect another poor year to come!

I don’t know, this may be the straw that broke the camel’s back this year.

Saying that had a seedsman down yesterday who said he’s sold 85% of his allocation/target. Most regular customers of his are having the same amount as usual.

As I understand it, most of uk 'average' production is grown on contract, so that will be repeated.

Free buy is a small proportion of the market these days, so doesn't need to many extra tonnes to tip the market.

Your area must be very different to us in the fens. Most of my neighbours don't contract at all. We have a bulk contract to ensure some movement normally March and April are good months for getting a good storage carry without waiting to the bitter end.

We try and bag from October onwards and use the Easter contract as an insurance policy for anything that might loose its fry colour or have a slightly higher bag count. Some years we have blended 45/55mm back into the bulk sample to get a better whole crop return.
