Proposed new Sugar Beet factory in North Yorkshire

I'm unsure BS are the only people legally allowed to process sugar as we have T & L refining sugar in London and have imported sugar.

The factory on paper does seem huge and given its location relatively far north.

As it's proposed by a foreign company it doesn't mean BS would have to close a factory but it would certainly add competition which can't be bad thing for growers in the long run.

This will be interesting to watch how it plays out.

Indeed. Road infrastructure would probably need upgrading.
Anyway, I'm sure we keep getting told to eat less sugar. This factory would mean a 50% increase in sugar production capacity in England
The road infrastructure is pretty good. A new roundabout onto the A59/A1m just south of the site and a roundabout outside the factory would probably be all that is required.

The waste incinerator that is being built next door to the proposed site is looking for an outlet for the heat it will produce.

Is that normal capacity for peak season? 36k tons seems like a lot of product to shift.
The bury factory in Suffolk processes about 11000 tonnes per day.Wissington ( British Sugars biggest factory is I think about 18000 tonnes. So 24-36 thousand per day would mean a huge factory.

I thought the British Sugar website would give the slicing capacity of their factories, but all I can find is a figure for Cantley of 9000 tonnes a day.
24000-36000 tonnes a day is massive.

What about a water source? is it next to a river?

An excellent break crop bring it on, they will have to offer realistic prices and presumably have some growers signed up before the factory is built.

Good break crop down here too, at least it was when we lifted with 3 row harvesters and 8 ton trailers.
Not sure so many think along those lines now after 60 tonne of loaded Grimme harvester, 18 tonne + trailers and loaders have turned the soil structure into a scene resembling the Somme.

I bet it doesnt happen! One thing proposing and costing the site out, a different matter when it comes to building it. As you say, big plant just to build out the blue in the UK.

Step 1) Propose something huge; causes traffic; might make some kind of smell.
Step 2) Queue inevitable public outrage.
Step 3) Offer to build something different.
Step 4) Get wild approval.
Step 5) Smile, as thats what you were after all along.

Suppose it will end up more a "media science park" kind of thing with lots of lovely development grants. Sceptical house is sceptical.

The waste incineration plant has probably ticked box 1 already, and they went ahead with that.:confused:
Lots of lovely 'free' heat energy.
SB factory probably looks good on a map as there's nothing else north of Newark?
I wouldn't rule it out.

Also putting in planning application for the closed Ferrybridge "C" power station site - Nothing like getting the councils fighting amongst themselves to get a good deal.

What could be better than the M62 / A1 crossroads, but it would need the A1 upgrade from the south as part of the project.

Chatting to a local councillor tonight and apparently we shouldn't build a factory in N.Yorks because it might upset the growers in Newark. discuss?, Apparently its more efficient to sent our waste to China than burn it in N.Yorks.
