Protected Urea (Alzon) - any good?

The price offered on the Alzon is 60p/ton dearer, which makes it £280/ton so I'll probably give it a go. Just worried it won't respond like AN, but as with most of these things often there isn't much difference!

The biology must love that...

I had a chat with a 'soils chap' (ex ICI) about urease inhibitors / nitrification inhibitors recently, and he was firmly of the opinion that this recent fad of applying all nitrogen in a single hit with an inhibitor was severely detrimental to soil biology. Part of the reason was (if I remember correctly) that it had a severe effect of acidifying the rooting zone to very low pH's, causing severe issues with microbiology and nutrient availability.

From what I can see, as soon as one Schoeffel wearing goon does it in the Farmers weekly, everybody wants to jump on the 'new fangled' bandwagon.

The person shouting the loudest about it around here is the guy who sold the 'inhibited' fert to the farmer in my original post, but he's the guy making a commission from the fert sale

We applied it to grassland in two hits last season. Because it was so dry I can’t say whether it was any better or not. I should also add that a certain West Country supplier has deskilled their sales personnel and are unable to offer qualified agronomy advice even for the grass boys.

Got some Alzon Neo-N left from last year and got a small field of wheat. Im going to be brave/stupid and give it its whole dose of N tomorrow (220 kgN/ha or 480 kg/ha product.)
Will keep you posted

You need to only do half the field for a proper test, and i would leave it another 2 weeks if its as green as it is around here.

Dont know if you can make out white cane in centre of pic, left side done with 500 kg/ha Alzon Neo-N (230 kg/ha N), right side done with standard 1st dressing of 110 kg/ha granular urea (50 kg/ha N)
