PTO guard rant

What a terrible attitude!
No, he’s right. That’s why I had to give up smoking, the tractor ashtrays were always full and it was costing me a fortune in financing new ones.

What I did with young people watching; Dangle an old jersey over a bare pto shaft running at full speed. It’s really shocking to see how easy a sleeve gets picked up, and it’s thrashed to bits in a fraction of a second. Tell them to listen to how the engine note doesn’t alter and it would be no different if they were wearing it.

Do you not use pto's much?
Been doing about 2000hrs ish a year in past on my own machines and other people's.
My late father taught me to never start a machine without checking oil/ coolant. I even do it on vehicles.
Saved me a lot of hassle once. Hired a car in New Zealand, no oil on dipstick when I picked it up. A month old Toyota. Could have been a mess if I'd started car. Gave me another car for a week free.

Totally agree. I would sack anyone who doesn't check machines. Glad I don't employ anyone now.
Machine operators should know the machine they are driving inside out. All service points etc.

PTO guards are crap, new flail mower last year and guard self destructed within the first 30 acre.

put a new one on of another brand and hope this one lasts longer.

In the past 20 years, I had about 7 New Hollands and a ECU packed up on one, two MF were nothing but electronic hassle and didn’t last a year and of 9 JDs two gave alternator issues at 1000 and the other at 24 hours and were fixed immediately so perhaps a few hours downtime but that’s it. Dealer shows up to service them when they want as they have remote access to the tractors and know what’s going on. I know I won’t be lying on my deathbed wishing I had dipped the oils on a machine!😁 I guess we are all different, some lads wash and polish and put carpets in them and remove their boots.
