Tempted to try a pure stand of chicory rather than turnips or kale/rape treat it as a break crop and full reseed in autumn

Dry field several access points

Thoughts?

I grazed some once on an organic place before they upped there own sheep numbers.

I put some long keep lambs on it, and they were like a different mob of sheep after 2 months!!

Could you DD/overseed ryegrass into it in the Autumn rather than full reseed? The ryegrass would probably outcompete the chicory enough in the cooler weather to get established especially if you grazed at a low-ish cover once put in, then the chicory would still be there next year. The chicory tap roots with be good for the soil structure, especially in a pure chicory ley so might be good not to undo that work also. Having said all that never tried it but sounds like a good idea to give a go.

I half contemplated that same idea myself

Once a day farmer on YouTube does straight chicory. Great as a summer break.

Chicory and annual clover might be a mix worth trialling to reduce artificial N. Have a nearby neighbour who does this.

Watched a few of his videos, then saw one where he gets cows from paddock at dinner time onto feed pad where they are fed buffer through a keenan then put back out to paddock
Lost all interest at that moment

Think that’s only in the summer as they’re in a dry area. No systems perfect!

Put a few fields in here last March as a buffer crop sown after fodder beet (not having fodder beet again). Grazed it 3 times then DD rye grass, festulolium and clover in the autumn. The chicory established very well and grass is coming up strong next to it. Very pleased with the establishment.
