Questions for Janet Hughes at Cereals next week

I am on panel chaired by David Exwood next week at the cereals event speaking with Janet Hughes

I have been asked to talk about my experience of Sfi pilot and Sfi so far .............. frankly I don't have a lot to say on that as it's been pretty straight forward other than issues around how CSS and SFI can co-exist etc

I would like to use the opportunity ask questions form TFF members so if you have any please post them in this thread !

Keep them short and to the point please, I will ask as many as I can, up / down vote the ones you like the most using the up/down arrows on the righthand side of the reply boxes

Just watched this, appreciate @Clive is relating his own experience in the main but do feel he was somewhat disingenuous to the TFF readership in his final reply. Clive was given an opportunity to go on the record and say the overall opinion amongst TFF farmers is it is an ill thought out shambles instead of meekly agreeing that it’s all an exciting step in the right direction.

I'm an arable farmer, not a livestock farmer....but I don't see these new schemes as having any benefit to me.

The number one reason I won't engage is that I don't trust them not to try and screw farmers over.

They've got a pretty good record at that and I haven't seen any evidence to show:

1) they recognise their attitude
2) they have changed
3) or even that they are willing to change

I'd rather not gamble if I can help it.....but if I have to I certainly wouldn't do so at a casino with rigged odds and no accountability.
When you're putting time and money into environmental CS/SFI options it's a huge risk to be at the mercy of the judge jury and executioner RPA inspector. Especially if they inspect in year 5 and backdate.

@Clive, did anybody manage to film the @Janet Hughes Defra seminar which you both took part it?
Or has anybody got a transcript of what was said?

What questions were asked of her and did she answer them properly?
Particularly regarding AB6.

Nobody seems to have mentioned anything about the latest SFI additions.
Where they released?
What is in them?
full recording - sorry for poor sound quality etc but was best we could manage at short notice

sorry if I disappointed

but I have no mandate to represent anyone other than myself

Did you have any off 🎤 chat with the NFU guy?
Was he aware of your views on his organisation?
Anyway, I thought you did a good job given the time allowed. Not an enviable position, being expected to represent such a disparate group of people as us farmers.

we had a chat before and after, we shared a lot of common ground re the good and bad of ELMS I felt. I’m sure he’s aware of my dislike for many areas of NFU policy and it’s “jobs for the boys“ image. That should not get in the way of discussions like this however. Politics should never be personal anyway imo

for what it was worth I thought he did a good job as chair and would make a better president than the sound bite one we have right now or the other likely candidates next in line to that throne !

Depends what side you are on.
As an arable farmer @Clive feels Janet has done her job brilliantly!
Every livestock farmer in the country disagrees!

I wouldn’t use the word “brilliant“ but what is on offer to arable farmers is, generally speaking, ok and improving / tweaking all the time. I believe we will end up with something that doesn’t deliver public goods / natural capital and hopefully pay us PROPERLY for doing so

I can also see that it’s not good for livestock at all so am in total agreement with your post, I sincerely hope this gets addressed

Well watching and trying to learn and decide the way ahead. Thanks Clive for your summary. I think it looks like they will announce them at 'Groundswell' which means we might get some video footage that is not available a 'Cereals'. At the moment I have extended my ELS/HLS and plod on. My arable is done on a Contract farming basis by my nieghbour and still have my Lincoln Red cattle which I try to get other people to try. Of course there are Lincoln Red's at several of the shows so if your interested in fitting them in to your system speak to the people at the shows.

Announcement at Lincolnshire show on 21st June?

Back slapping all round for the Jolly good fellows then

You posted the question a while previous and probably knew longer ago than that!

As you well know the NFU is a very broad Church, if you can find someone who in their heart of hearts agrees with every area of policy then they are a yes person.
Having said that, when your on a board and the decision has been made by the majority, your job is to represent those behind you whether you agree or not. Perhaps that's where your aptitude is lacking?

Images can be deceptive, the Agricultural industry is quite small compared to business as a whole. Only so many that are willing to stand up and represent other farmers .

You really are quite funny at times, don't see the farmers on Ticktok or YouTube with the BBC resources you mention.

They all started out with a decent phone and microphone.

Rocket science it no longer is.

You'll never be an Olly,Tom or Millennial farmer that for sure with that sort of can do attitude

Does seem rather amazing given that I see many simple events these days being filmed with these small cameras that the organisers of Cereals 2023 didn't have recording of these seminars as a matter of routine if for nothing else to place on their website as a promotional item to show what I and others missed by not attending. And especially given the high profile of the speakers.
Groundswell organisers are ace at doing this.

It will never be addressed because the idiots designing policy believe the claptrap that ruminants are destroying the planet. Remove BPS while not adequately replacing it with the SFI and livestock food production becomes uneconomic. Job done and another step towards net zero.
@Janet Hughes Defra come in here and deny the obvious if you dare.

we did record it with a iphone - that is available free for all to see, we are not paid for or do not monitise that and I have zero desire to be a youtuber thanks ! olly, tom, mf etc will never be a TFF either and i prefer “platform owner” to “platform contributor” frankly

i’m eternally sorry that it took us 24hrs to upload, i’ve been busy at a charity event all day today and we had issues with uploading a .mp4 that is over 1hr long big files are not quite so easily shared as a 15min youtube rant

now shut up and say thank-you maybe ?

I appreciate you tackling some of the issues. Is there anyone within the tff ranks who could tackle a similar panel from a more livestock perspective. I think you said they were going to groundswell ?

but we are there so will try our best to film anything if we are allowed to by the organisers

For balance, Clive doesn't actually sell advertising, thats mine and others responsibility, I actually was the reason the posting of the video was delayed and it was me that posted it.

Just saying ;)
