Ram advice

I take your point as I currently work on the Downs. But when the weather’s miserable I think back to my days in Scotland and console myself that it really could be an awful lot worse! Did enjoy it though.

We sell to market at fat lambs at 40kg -45kg lamb in April

Hi Thankyou
I prefer Texel as we have time to fatten , would I have to split my ewes in to 3 groups then ?
Tegs -south down
Quarter of ewes- Romney
Rest of ewes on - Texel ?
Or can I get rid of south down ?
Looking for the easiest solution
Thanks
Do you remember what I said as to why we started using the South downs in the first place.

Im a little confused.

When do you lamb your sheep? You say you are selling in April, does that mean you lamb outside really really early (winter?) or are you running your lambs around for a year until the following spring to sell. If the latter is the case, and you're struggling for most to make 40/45 kg then . . . . . . you have a greater issue than what breed of ram to use. If you are selling them in April of same year that they are born outside, then you are doing extremely well and I'd stick with what you are doing.

When folk do these threads, a greater introduction to the farming system they use and its ins and outs is a pretty important factor in offering advice!

I think there should be a full stop after 45kg.

Making "lamb in April" a separate sentence.

Might be wrong though

Would the Charollais breed benefit from an inclusion of more Southdown blood? Or even vice versa, they are related of course.
To what end?:scratchhead: Thankfully, there’s still enough variety in the Charollais breed that you can choose a type to suit your system.

For even easier lambing than Charollais, hardier lamb & much better finished lamb than Southdown. Could be just a small proportion of Southdown

Love it when you get a nice bit of feedback. Was on a farm in Aberdeenshire with a bus full of Cumbrians/Borderers a fortnight ago. Guy producing Beltex, BFL and some crossers. He had no clue who we were. He had Charolais and Charolais/Beltex put to a Texel. Turns out he used a tup we sold his Texel breeder neighbour five years ago and was quite proud to announce the fact. Makes it all worthwhile sometimes.
