Your heart plate is worn meaning the shuttle isn't moving the full range of motion.

Call Marcus at Livestock Management Systems and he will talk you through a repair

Is the drive belt twang tight? Ours played up last year and the tensioning bar had come loose and the belt wasn’t running tight. 2 minutes and it was working perfect again
I'll tighten that up. There's significant play in the gear box, shaft bearings and tensioning bar for the drive belt. Was hoping it would make it through its second winter before a big refurb

It's really not a big deal refurbishing a rappa unit. £200ish would just about get you everything apart from the frame and you probably wouldn't need everything. A lot of the cost of a new one must be in the frame.
What I would say though is if your on an old one with bushes in then upgrade to the one with roller bearings.

I cant see the heart plate wearing down that much to make a difference to be honest.

I suspect my issue is maybe in the gear box?
If the gearbox is on the way out there's nothing you can do. You can't repair them. A new one will cost about £60.
Check the grub screw that locks the gearbox in place isn't loose, it might just need a tweak up.
If the small chain is slipping it won't wind properly. It will slip if the tensioner isn't working correctly or if the chain wheel (the sprocket that looks like it's from a bicycle) is worn or the chain has stretched a bit or possibly a combination of all 3.

That's been my issue a few times. I now carry a 4mm Allen key on the bike.

We’re the same now. Always carry the Allen key along with spare springs and clutch pads
You can guarantee to loose a spring and end plate in 20 acre field of turnips if you don’t vcarry a spare on the bike.
Back to OP had similar problems with mine and last spring gave it a full overhaul, new gearbox about £50 pads on clutch plates, replace grab screws. New spindle bars, chain and tensioner and even chain drive cog, about £200 but like new and not put a foot wrong since. You take them for granted and forget how useful they are until they don’t work properly !!

Absolutely! Ours gets bladdered with Oil and WD40 as regularly as I remember, usually once a week. I know one thing, if anything happened too it I’d be having a new one sent next day.

I have a storage rod welded upright on the headstock of my winder. When not in use springs and clutch pads go on it. Has dramatically reduced losses.

I've also sprayed both bright red, to improve chance of finding if they do get misplaced in the grass.

I still carry spares though 😂

Totally off subject but how do you operate them single handed?. I can't seem to do it off the seat so end up running out a length throwing off posts as I go. Then walking back and putting posts in nd wire on.
I dont have nice straight runs to do. Mostly following hedgerows.

I always run the wire out, then walk back along the fence with the bundle of stakes on my shoulder, pacing out and putting them in as I go. That way I can make sure I have lovely straight lines between any corners/bands and exactly the same number of paces between stakes.

OCD? nah...
