Undersown spring barley cut today for baling tomorrow, the field had overwinter cattle grazing kale until end of February.

Glad to free up a bit more grazing as that hot spell has burnt much of my summer graze. Be nice to have a week of good rain now to freshen the soil and deter the tourists.
Going to have to bite bullet and do that online rat control qualification bit quick or talk nicely to a red tractor neighbour in an effort to secure a supply of ratty treats.
Good cost effective means of reseeding on dry light land. Intending to stack on top of grass silage bales in effort to confound ratty, though my neighbour considers I ought to stack away from grass silage and limit damage to wholecrop alone!!

Also found it helped to stack them away from the yard and to space the bottom layer out as much as possible so that cats or foxes can access the gaps. They will take care of the rats if they can get to them.

i was gonna say, what about trying the electric ' fence' around the outside, like someone on here, put around their combine..... in combination with sand if not on concrete i guess.....

.........chap seems to have deserted his thread........

Nobody appears to have a foolproof solution. I know I shall most likely get problems but the bales are 3 high, the bottom is grass silage. Stack is edge of a field close to where they will be fed. Stack is on turf just relying on grass bales and nesorexa sachets throughout stack.....will probably feed whole crop sooner rather than later if start to see extensive damage.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
