Rayburn with DON vaporising burner. Running well in spring. Ran out of kero before I turned it out. Cleaned decoked new wicks new tank filter, still can't stop it sooting up badly in 24hrs. Have cleaned the valve in control box. Nothing has changed with levels etc. Any ideas? Can't believe something so simple which ive serviced for years is now playing up. Cheers.

Not sure if mine is anything like yours, it’s 14 years old but when I had trouble with soot it was the air intake blocking with hair etc.

I’d think your getting air somewhere like the wee lightening hole seal it up better and the centre piece u put on seal it up as well. also check vaporising burner is dead level in both planes. Check that holes are clean we’re it runs through to the wicks from centre brake cleaner good for shifting the muck out if it. Could be maybe you’ve gotten some diesel in tank as well.

Poor quality oil, put additive in the tank

Sounds like your oil supplier failed to clean the diesel out of his pipe before filling with kerosene or maybe even supplied you with diesel instead of kerosene. Would get your diesel tested just to make sure it is kerosene.

Does the cover on the little lighting hole sit over the hole correctly ?
The old burner in our rayburn didnt sit properly, and was fixed by folding a piece of foil to make a sort of gasket between the opening and the flap.
Maybe a dose of additive might help too.

I've left the lighting flap open by accident before and all it did was popped a lot. This is different tho. Thick soot and smoke from chimney soon after lighting. Not the right colour flame at all. No diesel in tank. Im sure it's a mistake on my part

Cleaned it all out again last night. Fixed dodgy lighting port cover with tin foil. Seems not enough oil getting through hardly any flame, lots of smoke. Will have to strip out control box. Blooming thing

Does it make any difference to the heat output if you turn the control knob up ?
Is it the oval Oil control valve ? Have you had the gauze filter out the bottom of that ?
I had a problem one with ours, running cold on setting no 1, same on no 2 and then working correctly on the rest of the setting.
Found out the metering valve had gummed up, and not letting enough oil through, i gently cleaned it, polished it up with brasso and its been fine ever since.

This may be of help
Edit, link did not work.
Try here and look under technical, then oil control international

Yeah that's the one. Had gauze out and cleaned valve in earlier attempts. Usually have it well up when lighting.
Thanks for the help.
Will read up on that link

We have had supply pipes gum up over time, kero will form lumpy sludge just like the new diesel, I'd put money on its starved of fuel, just had same with ours!

Hi.
smoke is caused by lack of air , not too much.
I had similar problem years ago and it puzzled me for days.
Traced problem to the centre plug which was not sealing properly.

You sound like you know what you're doing with the burner.
My moneys on dirty fuel messing something up, could be a splash of diesel got in the tank. The bother tractor diesel is giving everybody up here just now with biodiesel inclusion it wouldn't take much to gum up the valve.
Dad has an Esse with a pot burner and his is a filthy running bugger of a thing, it soots up badly and its a pig to clean out too, its not fuel starvation with his but I think lack of draw in the chimmney, my Don burner is far cleaner running.
We both had Kero in at the same time once and both had clogged up cookers and grumpy wives, so it does happen. He tried some additive and I think it did help.
Are you sure the inlet pipe to the burner is clear?
I've a Don burner in my Rayburn and the last time it coked up bad it was blocked on the 90deg elbow well down from the burner, never had to clear it that far down normally, nearly caught me out. Also heard of a careless bit of PTFE tape across the pipe at the union blocking flow.
Never had to fiddle with control box so cant help you there.

Hi.
I repeat ,
If it smokes it has too much fuel not a shortage.
But, a lack of air has same effect .
Lack of air is often caused by a cold chimney ie lack of.draught.
About 30 years ago we fitted a fan

Hi
Missed a bit some where.
Fitting a fan stopped any draught problems
Additive is well worth the money

Aga was new in1974 and still runs as if was new.
