Re: Need advice about what to do after a TB reactor in cattle

Hi,

I've had a private tb test on 8 cattle, that are due to be sold next week. I've got my results tomorrow and I noticed that I've got one with a lump on the bottom and nothing on top. It looks as though I'll be going down with tb. Will I be able to sell the other seven cattle or am I going to be completely shut down?

Thanks

Is it for pre movement ? Accidents do happen, legs get broken on slippery yards and stock have to be sent to the knackerman.
don't be an idiot. If he has TB in his herd it is better that the whole herd is tested to get it cleared out. I also think there are rules about sending even casualty or deadstock mid way in a test for obvious reasons.

To the OP, we were convinced we had a reactor this year (we had a breakdown 2 years ago) but by the time the readings were done the bottom lump had reduced in size and she passed. She has since been culled with no comeback.

No. unfortunately the other 7 cannot be sold as planned and you will be shut down.

Sorry Boss, was merely tossing an idea in the air. Not that anything like that ever happens.

If you go down there are a number of options available to you. You can sell the clean cattle at an orange market where people with AFUs will buy them. Or you can sell them privately to another TB restricted holding subject to getting a license and their TB status being the same as yours. I think Halls do a 'Red' market which is direct to slaughter. All the info you can find online.

Don't beat yourself up until the vet has measured. As said, any lumps can disappear by 72 hours, or others appear. Also a 'circumscribed' reaction is treated diferently to 'odema'.

Options if the worst happens are limited until you have had a whole herd test. Licences are discretionary, and except for slaughter, a herd test is now a prerequisite before you can move anything at all..
You say this is a preMT, but not whether you are dairy or beef? Obviously options for dairy animals will be different from AFU beef requirements.
