Obviously loader and all the other bits have been swapped...so we now have a pair of good 85hp tractors with wet brakes for trailer work, plus the 1594, not forgetting the 990, which spent the spring on narrow wheels, drilling sugar beet for a neighbour

Looks a tidy bus does that

Didnt do bad really...gave 1800 for the 1390, loader, spare set of wheels, bucket, muck fork and other bits about 10 years ago

She had a new clutch and a re-spray in 2010, but she just wasnt really man enough for loader work, its been dragged home on 3 wheels a few times, and with dry brakes it wasnt the best tractor to just put anyone on at harvest

In the meantime, this 1490, what a couple of years ago i had completely rebuilt the engine and cab interior on, and sorted out any other faults, came available. I managed to buy it for £2700 in the end

Kept the loader and all the spare bits off the 1390, and that sold for £3000....everyones a winner, ive got a bigger tractor and made a days profit ;)

I'm not a db lover but they were ok if respected and treated right as are Leylands mine has not been touched for twenty years but I don't beat sh!t out of it even when I did a bit of round baling for local farms it was reliable and I baled many a hillside the Ford men only tackled down hill and a few the mf boys wouldn't go near even diehard ford men would ask is it six pot that it pulls well no its only a four pot I'd reply .Every model of every colour has its issues
Are you seriously saying a Leyland 282 is better than a massey 390 ?
I hadn't realised how many more of the Leylands they sold compared to masseys?

I some ways yes they far out did the massey and other ways the massey was better . Brakes and steering mainly my leyland is faster on the road will out pull a 390 low draw bar and pto even with guards on you were on and off unwrapping grass off pto don't get me wrong Leylands were by no means the best but they didn't deserve the slating they got either . I've read it that at the nebraska tests the leyland 498 was widely regarded as the best pound for pound engine by most manufacturers for torque and economy they couldn't match them .They had the same size clutches as massey but many Leylands went through clutches I've never had one fail early yet .many people treated Leylands like sh!t and complained when they broke I've seen 272 s used to pull a Lowloader with a hymac on it he went uphills with the diff lock in and front wheels off the ground he did that for years and it kept going he couldn't believe it

Would you get a modern deere or ford or massey of 70 hp and put a ten plus ton load of grass on its back today and expect it to keep up with the bigger stuff no but they did in the day and those sh!t old Leylands or Marshalls did it I've been there running a 702 just about managing to keep in front of 7610s pulling trailers they did catch up and pass me but it took them all day to do it .

Believe you me it's not fun you had to know the road and go slow on the twisty bits and pray alot but on the straights open the taps and em let go watch massey dissappear in your mirror you always knew where the Ford was just follow the plume of smog then put some fuel two squirts Leylands full 13 gallons from empty mf about 18 gallons ford well phone the Arabs to send a tanker full .

But the massey would do the same job with no fuss, so what if it's not quite so fast top speed, if that's an issue then get 40k box
Even a Ford would do all that, okay it would need twice the diesel

Yes that's true but my point is everyone will slate the leyland even though it's done the same amount of work as the rest . The problem was leyland were deemed crap and as a result every man and his dog had a go at repairing them then sold it so the next guy buys what seems a resonable looking tractor suffers the consequence of some not so good repair work and thus it fails oh that sh!t old leyland we ll have a do it ourselves and so on and so on and the attitude towards them gets too get that f ck ing old leyland and wrag the rubbish off it then sell it on etc
