Removing thick thatch.

I am in the process of clearing a large patch of bracken with a view to planting some trees.
There is a very dense layer of thatch and I was wondering what you folks would recommend as the easiest way to get down to the top soil?. I tried the walk behind rotavator but the grass just clogged it up in no minutes flat.
I was thinking something like the old Howard rotavator behind the FE35 if I can find one or has this been replaced by power harrows these days.

there is a japanese made perkins motor in a venieri loader next door

Burnt it before all you do is feed it and it grows back thicker the next year

Kick the patch where you’re going to plant the trees away with your boot when you go to plant them.

Wear hobnail boots when you plant the trees, like Davie said clear the absolute minimum area required

Well all the bracken has been cleared and burnt.
Will "Roundup" kill the roots or is there a better product out there.

roundup needs green leaf to be absorbed so if everything is burnt you will have to wait for regrowth.
