Replacing an oil boiler.

Can't go wrong with a correct heat loss calculation and a correctly sized biomass boiler. Steer well clear from air source heat pumps or ground source heat pumps.

Ground source heating is good, we had a system installed a number of years ago. It does require the house to be reasonably well insulated however.

That’s a very sweeping statement re heat pumps. Have you had a bad experience? Many folks seem perfectly happy with them.

Maybe ‘cos of trying to use the low grade heat through a conventionaly sized radiator system - I have an ASHP and feed the warm water through underfloor heating pipes installed as part of a new build in 1995.
The house has NEVER been more congenial to live in.
Previous oil boiler heat balancing never seemed to work properly, probably due to poor installation and lack of understanding by the original plumbers.

How much doe's everyone else spend to heat their houses? We have an old 5 bedroom house with loft insulation and solid walls it has 15 radiators heated by a worchester danesmoor 20/25 it keeps all the house hot, REALLY hot and uses about 2000litres of kero burning oil per year, the last of which cost 50p a litre including the VAT. so thats £1000 a year, we do use electric to heat the water in summer when the heating isn't on. How much do other systems cost to run?
We will use the 3000l, happy when the O/H goes of to work so as to turn the thermostat down
