Having just snapped an old one in half been told that a new one is 300quid

Get some 2mm sheet and repair it.
All the secondhand ones will probably be damaged in some way or repaired.
Frankly, If you'd have said a grand I wouldn't have been surprised, 300 quid sounds a bit half sensible...

£300 at the claas counter would normally only buy you a couple of o rings

I think the ladder is made by Werner. I bought a Werner 722 series ladder off eBay which cost £134. I think the Werner product code is 72229. The upper section fits but is 10 rung instead of 9. Cut it off or leave as is. You’ve also got the first stage to use elsewhere.

I think I misunderstood, you mean engine bay access ladder, not cab steps?
Perhaps steps would be nearer a grand

Clima 742 ladder is a good replacement. Plenty on ebay for £60-£80
