Richard western trailer spring pin

Anyone replaced the pin to stop the axle sliding on a rw single spring. It's off a sf with 10 stud axles. The pin has always gone through the spring in trailers iv done before. This is a little stud that iv been told hammers in but it's loose and will drop out into axle as shown in photo

Yes we have in the past was the ubolt stack ?
One was slightly as the spring had slid to the narrower part. pin on rear axle had snapped and the other axle pin had dropped out. How did you change them? I can't see anyway of keeping new pin in place unless I cut a bevel or slot and weld them in. If I run a bead of weld around them the spring won't sit flat on the plate. Did yours hammer in tight?

Don’t put the welder anywhere near the spring it will destroy it.

Any suggestions? I waited 2 weeks for these bits!!! I need the trailer now asap no one I speak to seems to have any ideas.... Should surley be a fairly common part to fail occasionaly with people and terrible design if the new ones don't fit tight as soon as there's a bit of surface corrosion

Maybe put a dob of weld on the pin and hammer it in? That way friction would keep it in without heat affecting the spring?

Maybe but it's designed to stop the spring and axle sliding apart so as soon as it has a bit of force on it it will surley wiggle back out.... The braking force will be going through it even if u bolts are tight. A nut in the recess is a good idea tho

If I remember right it's called a bevel. Looks like a u bolt has become Slack and sheared it. You really need a new spring and possibly saddle if it is badly worn.

Is the hole in the axle blind? If so drop a piece of bar/ bolt to reduce the depth
Ye that's the new plan I think.... Would rather they were right through spring and bolted tight as the bit that goes into spring is tiny but never mind.

I'll pack it out as i need trailer asap and see if it lasts. If it goes again might be new spring but seems poor design if I have to change spring just because of the pin

It won't be the pin, it will because the u bolts became slack. By all means pack it up and get going tighten the I bolts as tight as you dare without stripping or stretching the threads then check after an hour then daily until you can get back to it. As far as I know all commercial springs work on the same principle, sometimes the bevel/pin is fixed sometimes it is an insert.

It’s the friction between the axle and spring that stops the axle moving, the pin should be to locate the axle in the right position only.
If it’s braking the pins your U bolts aren’t tight enough!
They were bloody tight to undo but by this point they had all moved so bound to be tight. Any idea on what torque I can go up to on 30mm nuts fine thread?

Pretty bloody tight. Used to be a good yark on a 4' bar in my trucking days. Checked every inspection because they were sods for coming loose

Ye had to take wheels off to get a long bar to slacken them today..... and whoever put the wheel nuts on must have gone mental with them. I was struggling with a bar 850nm gun only just did them. Will torque them up properly going back on same as we do the lorry
