NZ had a rule (prob. still do?) allowing public access within a chain of any waterway
Was great---meant i could hike along and fish just about anywhere

We have a Byway Open to all Traffic that crosses a SSSI river. An element of 4x4 play crossing it causing enormous erosion and other problems. Nothing they enjoy more than getting stuck and playing with their winches. And yet it’s only agriculture that gets blamed for the diffuse pollution and damage to the rivers’ environment.

Open access and watch the habitat quality decline.

Wish we had a decent river nearby to roam on. Nearest is the 'River' Lark in the Tesco car park in Bury St Edmunds - a national disgrace!
The Waveney is lovely though, don't see the harm in casual canoeists, but jet skis would be a step too far!

I was at the local quad dealers a couple of years ago, a couple of lads out of a city about 70 mike away were there buying accessories for their bikes after which they were heading out into the hills, their aim to get stuck.

Yep (y) About $100 for a fishing licence and you're away.

Not sure it would work in Pom land though.

Definitely wouldn't work. Our fishing licence is unenforced/unenforceable and doesn't come with permission to fish.

An added complication is that many landowners (with river frontage) wouldn't own their fishing rights. Often they are sold or leased to a club or syndicate.
