Road hedges, again

Yes I know it’s been discussed many times.

I’ve tidied up the gateways today before harvest. Bloke who lives in the village stopped and asked me if I’d do the sides of the whole lane as he’s got a new caravan and it’s getting scratched to buggry.

Yeah. No. I explained about cross compliance. Obviously not very well.

So he changed his tune to how he’s a cyclist and it’s dangerous getting clobbered by cow parsley etc.

Notwithstanding the missed opportunity to pop a combined cyclist and caravanist through a spearhead at 540rpm and thereby improve the world a bit, he does have a point. The lane is narrow at the best of times. I wish the council would do it but no hope of that and it’s our ground both sides of the lane. I was thinking 2 passes each side from the bottom up would be pretty sensible. There’s about 4’ of verge/ bank topped by 5’ of hedge so to my mind it isn’t really hedge trimming, it’s “siding.” No nesting birds.

Anybody do anything similar?

Just done our lanes on road safety grounds, half the locals are happy it's done , half aren't . Can't please them all!

if you do a written risk assesment and deam the road to be a health and safety risk if the hedges are not trimmed then you are covered

there are always moaners and complainers on every side just do what you think and know is right

who in the rpa inspection system would be qualified to do a risk asessment and be insured to make the call

it could be one of your friends or relatives that gets hurt

You could always write yourself a letter, signed John Doe, complaining you were attacked on your bike, by a briar swinging violently back, it having been pulled forwards by the delivery van just in front of you. Mention you were very shocked and distressed by the whole event, and would almost certainly die, if it were to happen again, when the briar had grown a few more inches.
You could hand write some notes in the margin of that letter, that you too was deeply shocked at what John Doe had gone through. Note also, that you felt compelled to ensure no other cyclist, walked, tourist, or general member of the public, would be traumatised in this manner. Your civic spirit therefore compelled your to hitch up the Bomford, and make England a safer place for all.
