Roll bar legalities

Asking for a colleague.
does a big ride on mower 40hp ish legally need a roll bar.

I'm aware tractors over a certain hp (15 I think) require one. Just unsure about mowers specifically

Remember a few years ago,lad on a big toro greens mower rolled it on a steep bank at the golf coarse ,,he ended up hanging upside down by the seat belt , fire brigade had to get him out , had it not been for the roll bar, he would be brown bread

It all comes back to the health & safety at work act.

It is the duty of the supplier to ensure that as so far as reasonable practical, that it is safe and without a risk to health.

If the supplier didn't fit one then the employer will have a duty of care to their employees that it is safe to use.

Your colleague should work out the risk rating (likelihood x Impact) to assess what suitable control measures need implemented to lower the risk rating (if necessary)

But basically if there is a risk of overturning then a roll bar needs fitted no matter what size of a machine.

I wonder how we can fit a roll bar to a horse?

I would think if to meet regulations it needed one, the manufacturers would fit one, up to you if you use it. But surely it’s essential if you are working commercially or paying someone to be on it. Plenty of small plant about with roll bars.
