Rolling

We've just had 1/4 inch of rain following drilling with maybe more to come should I still roll if it drys up? Is there any rule of thumb about it?

No rule of thumb. Farm what is in front of you! On wet clay you'd do a lot of damage but not if it dries up in the top few inches. On gravel & sand you risk capping if it rains again soon after rolling.

If in doubt, don't roll. What crop? Why roll? Any pre em herbicides or stone problems? Cereals can be rolled once they've got 2-4 leaves emerged but will be more vulnerable before then. If you snap the single root or single shoot it's all over. With multiple leaves & roots you can afford to lose one or two.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
