Rough red diesel prices? weighing up if worth it

Hello.
I've got nowhere with a couple of very unhelpful 'speedy' and 'nationwide' fuel suppliers who couldnt even give me an approximate price for 500l red diesel. I've got about 9 acres mainly grazing and am taking delivery of a tractor next week. Will be doing only light use (harrowing, rolling, mowing, moving logs and spoil etc) and little winter work as gets very wet clay land.

Im looking at getting a 600l ibc tank with a manual pump (cost about £250), and then topping up with 500l orders of red diesel - hence looking for a rough idea of what 500l would cost currently.

There is a petrol station within a few hundred yards so Im just weighing up whether itll be worthwhile buying the fuel tank and getting deliveries, or just filling up from the petrol station. I cant imagine id need more than two deliveries per year but then i dont really know how much fuel the tractor will use (an old john deere 2040).

Id really appreciate any feedback and approx red diesel prices please, esp for similar orders.
TIA
Nick

I think you'll find that no one will want to deliver to an IBC tank as regulations require approved tanks and secondary containment (bunding) as far as I'm aware

Could you take your IBC to the garage on a pickup? :scratchhead:

Or would there be a stewards' inquiry like when you take 4 jerrycans for some petrol? :banghead:
You’d spend 4 days in Guantanamo Bay and be subject to water boarding by the over officious petrol fourcourt attendants plus the ignominy of being tannoyed to death

Useful info, thankyou all.
Thanks for the links 'Farfrae' - I think its a domestic supply and the tank would be only 600l so i dont think it comes under those regulations but i guess suppliers would soon advise if they are prepared to supply or not.
I dont think the nearby petrol station does red diesel but will check to be sure. I think there is one a couple of miles away that does though. Ill find out, and if so ill also check about what amount of fuel they'll allow to be dispensed. Sounds like it might be the best way forward to start with.

Barrel with sump and a hand pump?

Like this https://www.compassfuels.co.uk/fuel-oils/barrels/

This, it's not going to be as cheap as a bulk delivery but 500 litres at a time isn't going to attract the keenest pricing either.

To be honest you would probably be just as well trundling down to the nearest forecourt and filling with white. I doubt it'll amount to a material difference in cost over the course of a year on 9 acres.

There's only one filling station around here that sells 'red', mainly because the local hire place got sick of people breaking in and stealing from their tank, ended up doing a deal between themselves.

They will only sell 50 litres in cans, but if you go in with the machine you can have as much as you like.

Quite often see S/H tanks on FB. By the smallest, cheapest, you can find . Also do you use central heating oil ? order some of that too, to make you look like a more " attractive " customer.
