.....to shut down meat, fish and deli counters.
Vegans running the show?
(They are also massively down sizing Argos).
Nothing to do with vegans - just that they have realised that people don't want to stand in a queue to buy "deli" items that have sat festering in the open air for an unknown length of time, served up by a spotty teen on nearly minimum wage with no interest in the job. Instead people want to walk to a shelf & pick up a sealed packet of meat/fish/whatever & get out of the store as quickly as possible! Tesco started "downsizing" their delis & counters a while ago for exactly the same reason.

Do you think it also has something to do with people shopping more on line so less people standing in the queue at said stores?

Possibly, but I seen to recall that when Tesco cut back their offering less than
20% of in-store "baskets" included a deli counter item. Before the decline of the counters it was possible to order deli items etc as part of an online order, but it wasn't popular because the only benefit of the counter service of directly controlling what was selected is lost. Due to the nature of the supply chain and staffing requirements the overall value to the business didn't justify full retention of the service.

Whenever I walk past a supermarket fish counter, my first thought is how often have any of the bits of fish been out on display? I know they're on a bed of ice, but that doesn't keep the fish deep frozen & they're exposed to the air. Likewise with deli items, they're sat there exposed to ambient air all day for goodness knows how many days with flies around during the warmer weather. Go back twenty years & the only way to get haslet was from the counter, these days it's available in pre-pack & the same can be said of most items from the counters, so why would you waste time?

People who generally appreciate proper butchery, deli & fishmongering are the sort that have the time & money to visit specialist shops & farm shops etc for those items rather than buy from the supermarkets.

I read it twice and thought why would those f'ing vegans want to downsize Argos .............

On a serious note one more nail in the coffin (or an opportunity for differentiation)

Hopefully the local butchers will pick up some of the trade
Unfortunately I don't think that much trade will go that way - the supermarkets are dropping butchery because there's not much demand, much of the demand that is there will stick with the supermarket for convenience as those who genuinely want good quality butchery services already go elsewhere.
