Thinking I'd like to reseed some permanent pasture with Sam3 herbal ley, but assume that I will need an EIA, was arable until 2002 when it went into arable reversion

I've tried to come to a conclusion on the discussion here , but decided it may be better if you have a read yourself lol

Wonder if it makes a difference if its going back into grass, and a herbal ley is surely better than the crap it currently is

Have you spent the last 22 years declaring that you haven't 'cultivated' (ie sprayed, fertilised, harrowed) it? If so, you may have turned it into habitat land.

Is that not what has happened in the 'NE knows best' sticky thread?

The issue is can you cultivate it not what you sow
It's my belief that you can but I have nothing to prove that statement
How long was the agreement for ,if its for a fixed term then that's it ,you have signed nothing to prove anything different

Are you all going to stick with this or use your own interpretation off

It will usually include at least:

5 species of grass, such as cocksfoot, festulolium, meadow fescue, perennial ryegrass, smooth-stalked meadow grass, tall fescue and timothy

3 species of legumes, such as bird’s-foot-trefoil, lucerne, red clover, sainfoin winter vetch and common vetch, and black medick

5 species of herbs, such as burnet, chicory, ribwort plantain and yarrow

You can but don't get caught out with the need for 5 grass species, look what you have and add what you don't
As for overseeding, there is a process you need to follow , if you you don't there is a good chance it won't work, your main issue is the old grass growing back ,if that closes the light out on the new seedlings before fully developed they won't survive

For info
Seed merchants seem to be sticking with the 5 -3-5 mix , will refuse to give a bag label stamped SAM 3 if its not that , just a normal contents label
It is annoying that they change the rules, I sowed a supposed sam3 ley in august when the rules were to do a mix of grass, legumes and herbs so only sowed 2 of each variety which now won’t be eligible for sam3😡

How does this all fit if you choose to maintain an existing herbal ley? I don't like the direction of travel, which is best described as money for seed labels.

The aim is a varied root structure. It's much recited here that the aim is the only requirement of SFI. Accordingly, the only evidence should be an upturned sod.

Would this seed mix be compliant and if not what should I be adding this year?
I was going to add some yarrow back in. Maybe also some trefoil or something, as vetch doesn’t persist past the first year.

I've done the same. I won't be tinkering with it on a whim after establishment.
