Sawtoothed grain beetle

Had a load of oats rejected with sawtoothed grain beetle, what's best way to get rid of them? I sprayed shed out with k obial before harvest but they seem hard to get rid of.

We used to use Reldan in the open stores and Actelic smoke bombs in the bins once they had been hoovered out and allso sprayed with reldan

I think your only option would be pesticide ad-mixture into the grain over a conveyor or elevator using K-Obiol (deltamethrin) or diatomaceous earth (e.g. Silico-Sec) however you need to check with your buyer, if they are milling oats they may not allow Silico-Sec as I believe it can damage their mills?

What temperature is the heap - you might have some hot spots, saw-toothed grain beetles need temperature over 15C to complete their life cycle.

Had some in a load of barley, I was advised to use K-Obiol as Reldan has a 90 day withdrawal period whereas K-Obiol can be delivered straight after application. Sprayed mine onto grain flow coming out the trailer shoot.

You could try grain fumigation with Phosphine by a contractor. That way you contain the problem, treating it in situ rather that spreading the problem around your farm.

Gas fumigation is the only way forward in situations like this. Cheap and effective.

Absolutely right. Spray floors and walls up to head height, bomb the rest. Smoke sorts out anything high up- drops to ground, gets whacked with reldan.

Not convinced K-obiol has the same staying power as reldan. Doesn't smell as much though.

If I had a big heap of high value stuff, I would definitely get a contractor to gas it.

We had three 80tn bins with mesh drying floor ,just to make sure we got everything ,we lit a couple of bombs infront of the fan and let it run for a a few seconds ,anything under the floor was sorted and anywhere else they might be hiding

We've had it and fumigation isn't as bad as you think and it's done properly and you pass the certificate on wth the passport we found no further problems.

We find an asperator seems to suck them out ok. Put the oats back through the Combine if you haven't got one.

We have made a small hopper for the front elevator. We auger the grain in to it and the elevator takes it back through the concave and on to the sieves. It worked well after the 2012 low bushel weight harvest, improved the wheat bushel weight by blowing the rubbish out of it at 50t an hour.

Fumigation only costs between £1 and £3 a ton depending on the tonage. It's a no brainer. It costs a lot more to move and mess about with it.

I totally agree with you, but will the buyers take grain with dead bugs in it? When I had some milling wheat with Beatles in it, I was told by our buyer that if they found dead bugs in it, they will still regect it.

Well there is a question. You get a problem. You pay to get it treated professionally and still get it rejected. All I can say is to make it clear to your buyer that it will have dead bugs in it so send it to an appropriate home.

90 day withdrawal for 20 ml rate, for immediate use you use the 10ml rate

where do the come from are there one or two you never kill with grainstore hygiene pre harvest or do they come in with grain or birds often wondered
