Seed drill for grass seed

Vicon drill , accord , fiona grass bag. What do people use? Want to upgrade from Vicon spinner but don’t want to spend a fortune

We use a stocks slug Pelletier for grass seed so probably best to stick with the vicon

Einbok or similar with an airseeder does an excellent job but circa £6k fir 3m new

I've got the same sowed hundreds of acres with it with pipes off cheap and very chearfull

I lift the coulters up and just blow the seed out. Does a lovely job.

Slightly off topic, but what methods does everyone use to work the seedbed before drilling? I’ve always a lovely fine seedbed but it’s never as smooth as I’d like when I come in with the mower in the spring..

The trick is to flat roll it after every operation. This will consolidate and show the unevenness of it. Power harrows are the worst for leaving rough fields if you don’t tine the soil around to fill the hollows.

This is what we use on cultivated land and it does a great but steady job. For pasture sowing we use a Aitchison direct drill.

I have always blamed tyre marks for the unevenness.

Our reseeds are always lovely and smooth after a few passes with the power Harrow but it must always settle where the wheelings are or something because it ends up well rough going across the field.
I did think a set of rolls with levelling paddles on might be just the job but an expensive experiment

The wheelings are always the first bits to come up, even after the flat rolls.

The grass box + harrow job is the only way to do it in my view. They don't leave lines and are cheap as day old chips to run.

Guttler air drill on an amazone harrow here since 2015 much better than the Fiona box it replaced

We use the same as Nick , power harrow and amazone d8 super not posh for 2019 but just drilled 60 acre without any issues and is very accurate.

Don't you find a grain drill just plants your seed in rows leaving too much bare soil?

We are not proper grass growers we just use it as a cover it will be ploughed in by Christmas. We use 15 kg ha of seed and on good ground and some years there is a lot of material to go in.

Before the comb harrows & air seeder we used a New Idea fert spreader with a set of chain harrows towed behind
