Seed Fiddle

Here we go. Another picture from a box of old family farming photos.

This one shows my dad sowing grass seeds in about 1985 in his retirement field in the South Hams, Devon.

The seed fiddle that was at least 50years old then.

I can remember it clearly being stored safely in the farm house to keep it in working order - canvas seed sack, leather bow string, bits of timber frame and aluminium spinner.

Probably the last documented use of such a device, unless of course, you know better............

I have one, use it almost every year around gateways and ditch spoil planting grass seeds.

Use one here most years for patching up stubble turnips an such like! Chap who lives next door who used to work for us always tells of striding through waist high corn flirting stubble turnips on before combining!! I’m too young to remember waist high corn 😂

My old mate fiddle drilled stubble turnips into standing wheat. He spent a couple of days striding up and down the field spinning on turnip seed like a good’un in time honoured fashion. I combined the wheat and he baled the straw and lo and behold sweet FA stubble turnips. Chuck it on the bonfire and get a direct drill.

I launched a specialist magazine on this very subject in 2016 on here , search ‘My new magazine’ .
