September lambing dorsets

We purchased from a 300-400 hundred ewe flock that frequent lambs and renowd as one of the oldest flocks on the register. Sheep great mums and confirmation just dam feet.

What perecentage of flock would you expect to cull annually?

Id love to tell you, but we are only just over a year in, lambed one lot september, and anything that didn't take in jan.

Currently running at six ewes out of 151.

What lambing percentage did those that Lambed in January give you?
We are looking at ways to increase our lambing percentage as we lamb in January which is early for our ewes, and I thought a Dorset could be an idea going forward.

This is something I’m really interested in. I used to use a Dorset on my mules and part from being massive they made great ewes.
What percentage of ewes took the first time round, and what did they wean?
Then how many took to the ram the second time round and how did they scan?

The first time was an experiment and I think we were a bit over keen putting hoggs to the tup quite early, only a third of the took the tup.

That group lost I think one lamb until sale.

Remaining hoggs were put straight back to tup after scanning and all but a small handful took the tup, scanned something like 140%, which isn’t amazing but I think a combination of the breed and being young sheep didn’t help! But at least they mostly all got in lamb!

It’s all a bit of an experiment and now we are weaving the jan lambers and aiming to re tup them end of April for September again, so we shall see!

It’s a new thing and an experiment, a bit of a case of have a go and see.

We’ve gone in with regulin to try to push the jan lambers on to get in lamb.

If we can consistently get them to lamb sept/Oct and have all of the lambs weaned by jan and dead by end of feb we will be onto a winner I think.

Have you thought about running jan lambers with a teaser a bit later , poss for a couple cycles as its early ? will be a bit more spread than one cycle but will save on empties and regulin , regulin is ok if its not to sunny a spring / summer .

Just had this feedback from a chap that bought a couple last year for dorsets and it seems relevant so I thought I'd share:

"??? here bought 2 rams from you last year to put on poll dorsets mainly, just let you know lambs are doing really well really quick on there feet so much so even after 15 minutes can be a challenge catch little sods .looking for another ram have you got anything you could recommend .if you ever decide to sell the stock ram whatever his age is at time i would be interested really like the type your breeding got more head cover than some. See a lot of charmoise that are just too pink and bare .many thanks."

I spend ages watching them, we've a texel X charmoise in to lamb this week, and some Cheviot X charmoise outside to lamb. I can't wait! Loads of little piggies running around [emoji7]

Chevvy x charmoise are nice! I have so many mixes now, they are just such hardy crossbred ewes and really good mums

I have lleyn x charmoise, welsh mule x charmoise, Welsh x charmoise, Shetland x, exlana x and a few 3/4 bred ones.

And then the pure ones who all look like this now  at least they aren’t hard to spot...
