Setting up a local wood chip fuel supply chain

I dread to think, there is so much out there from dubious sources.

All that I have comes straight out of their tipping trucks via the customers garden so should be virgin so long as no stones get added in the yard

I keep trying loads from AW but not getting on well with it at all.

My CHP doesnt like it at all. Ive had grates full of nails, bits of chipboard, bits of pallet in loads etc etc. They tell me its all 100% virgin and no idea where any of the crap is coming from but someones telling porkies somewhere.

You can literally see on the pressure charts when it starts to burn their wood.
When an AWJ lorry pulls up here to collect chip I ask to look in the trailer to make sure it’s only my chip that’s in there. I’ve pulled out lemonade bottles, papers, bean tins. They shift a lot of recycling so there is usually something left behind.

Hijacking a bit..I've 6 huge poplars that need to come down as planted in the 70s, the tree surgeons don't want them and have said good just for chipping. Who do I go to? Not too worried about making my millions from them but would like some money to pay for the felling

Your having a laugh. Tree Surgeons normally get paid for felling the trees then ask someone like myself to collect and dispose of the poplar FOC as its to much like hard work for them to process and dry the logs without it going mouldy.

The idea is good , i am part of something similar . If you use a lot of chip you can slip a few
Its the washing line bolts and screws that you should be really worried about from trees in customers gardens. Makes a fine mess of a chipper.

is it? He doesn’t need to be cheap as he’s the only chipper within 2hrs of here.

To be fair he’s actually paid by the hour but it works out at just under £6/ton with fuel.

Certainly should be able to double his price easily. Would not want to do for any less as cost of replacement keeps going up. Be interesting to get new chipper prices at the APF show later this month. I bet they have not gone down in price.

Based in north yorkshire I charge £6 per ton which is the going rate round here . The shortage of timber , and price of timber is keeping it low i think
I would love to put the price up
Lot of the tree surgeons are getting me in to do the site clearance and selling the G30 to local farmers or to a local chip drier

Standard procedure here now any walking floor comes in, they are normally littered with rubbish inside, I won’t load any chip until I’ve looked in th3 back doors...

@Doing it for the kids, I have a local chip delivery round and a few larger customers fairly local who take walking floors.

We are competitive with the big boys but certainly aren’t cheaper, there is some very cheap chip around...

Using 100% Arb waste is very difficult on many levels, consistancy of product and supply is one, storing piles of stinking rubbish another, but ultimately our customers don’t want it as it doesn’t burn as well or as consistently as virgin chip and once you start supplying chip you are then seemingly solely responsible for any issue with their boiler, arb just exaggerates any of these issues !!

Also it takes a bit of management scheduling deliveries to not clash with farm tasks, I’m now proactive contacting customers in advance of busy times to arrange deliveries to not get in the way or on wet days etc, one customer in particular is away all week and quite often rings on a Friday night in a panic...

It’s also time consuming and ultimately costly over seeing arb coming in, screening it, disposing of the waste, up to 40% in worst cases, and if there’s any green in it leading to any smoke then customers are not happy, unless you are supplying it at a considerable discount to virgin chip...

I use a bit of arb to blend with chip for my own boiler but never in customers, larger boilers seem more tolerant of it than most of our customers

Ultimately, the customer is king and all of ours demand virgin chip.

Had an AWJ new start in last week, was the most unhelpful driver to date, wasn’t happy that I wouldn’t believe him that he was empty, I wanted him to open the doors, the floor had old newspapers, sandwich wrappers and poly bags left in from previous load.

Get an app whizz to design an app serving areas for chip. There isn’t a network out there for this business model. There’s a bigger picture here, advertising here for instance. The app host people who have fuel in whatever areas and people wanting fuel. Include mapping. Collect hauling firms information for transit and maybe a stock price for those that can store in summer being cheaper and increased in winter on high demand.

Surprised A W Jenkins hasn’t done it.

In fact, why aren’t you guys developing such a tool @Clive ?
