With potential £229/Ha on the table for s barley under sfi, are we about to see the return of the barley baron.
Been looking at sfi, i guess like many farmers, weigh up all the options, ipm1, sam1,2,3, num 1,2,3 …..hrw…..ahl… so on and so on , a bit of this and a bit of that, and it all starts to become a dogs breakfast, with the danger that the sfi tail starts to wag the farm dog.

So this afternoon I took the kiss route, and there it is, continuous s barley ?
229 + hss, 1 herb, 1 fungi, 120kg n ?, yes I won’t make a fortune, but I won’t spend one either.

Back to the future?

You can do much better than continious barley if you aim to maximuse SFI. You will need to farm a rotation of food and envronmental outputs to achieve it however

i think thats what DEFRA want

Just be wary that with continuous barley comes a significant risk of ramularia. We bought some reclaimed land that we tried this on as we thought it was too drought prone for wheat - got in about three years before we had to stop because ramularia was just killing the crop dead by about May. Just for reference this land had never grown barley before we took it on, and it was mainly winter barley we were growing but the spring barley suffered the same fate in rotation.

yes, I have heard this from people who have tried to grow spring barley for over 3 years to control black grass. ive done two spring barleys in a row and there is definitely an increase in pressure.
