Shearing young lambs

Often shore January or feb born lambs in June and July. Just the replacements as it made them easier to keep out of brambles that winter when they went off to winter fields.

I not sure they grow any faster or better because of it though. I’m actually almost certain they don’t. But it makes management easier

Used to shear any replacement ewe lambs at weaning. Even shore some when sheared ewes. They grew like stink.

Shearing lambs holds them back...

Easier management is the only reason to shear lambs

Well now that is surprising, always shorn ewe lambs and had thought of doing all store lambs left after weaning too this year

The Exlana and shedding welsh always look better condition and always feel better condition than other animals in their group, I put it down to them always being slightly cold so always ate more?‍♂️

I do mine at weaning, they do we'll eat more eta, if you're in a colder area maybe not so much difference. As for flys, much better off, it was the reason I sheard mine to start with
Yeah mine always coincides with another fly treatment give or take a week ?‍♂️

I believe a lot leave shearing lambs too late, and shear In August/September.
I'd shear earlier , June July whilst weather should be at its warmest and so less energy needed to keep warm . Can also be tied into fly control.

Earlier the better I find. Shear all my replacement when I shear the ewes at weaning. Wouldn't dream of not shearing them. They would be hung on the hedges and be some mess by lambing. Love it when they are transformed into wee ewes. Most of the hill guys we shear for draft in the ewe lambs and clip them with the ewes in July. Great idea but they are little sh1!s to clip. Enjoy ewe lambs in August or September cos the pressure is off and people aren't crying down the phone about maggots and cast ewes.

I agree as a shearer myself earlier the better and can be sh1!s to hold. As also said abot of people do them too late. After the big ewe lamb sale when weather is almost going the other way and lambs seems to stand still.
