Sheep buying help

I don’t have nor have to much interest in sheep but the Mrs would really like some. Help please with some suggestions.

We’ve narrowed down to the following

Kerryhills as I like the look of them. No idea on how they are to keep
Dorset’s as one of my best pals is big into them

We are about 700ft up, fair to middling ground. Good shelter and grazing ewes do well. Open to other suggestions that would keep easy and set her on her way. Want something that has some value outside a meat ring as she’d like to show and have something she can put her time and effort into and make them her own

Thoughts please

Have a look at Beulah Speckled Faces. They are a respected breed, but someone more familiar with them will be able to tell you how manageable they are. The attitude of the tups would also be an important factor.

Yeah I’ll be honest now, still not sold on the idea and she won’t stop badgering ?

Going to put the idea off till back end, then say we’ve grass that’d be better of in weanlings belly’s, let’s wait till spring then tell her prices will be better back end so let’s just hang on, and so on and so on and so on until she disappears with the cattle trailer comes home with whatever the f**k she wants. I think the corona rubbish has gone to her bed, she said the word goat to me last night....

My Beulahs were good mothers but always favoured one lamb. I never really trusted them with twins and admittedly most had singles. I lambed mine at 140% but they weren’t the big type. Mine were the smaller less-favoured Eppynt type.

Really strong ewes though and thrifty. I just think they need poor ground so they can have a single lamb and do that job well on a low cost system.

I had quite a few of them with triplets... always leave triplets on for 24hrs then lift the runt... be lucky if 2 of them lasted a couple hours with some of them before they lay on them or 1 threw a lamb out the pen 5 seconds after I put her in it... what can you do? I don’t want to get in the business of taking a lamb off even a twin and feeding big litres of colostrum either ... cull pen for most of them i think this time...
